Care Tips For Your Contact Lenses
|
|
Helpful Tips
Contact lenses should be cleaned and disinfected
daily or after each wearing period. If lenses are not worn on a daily basis,
they should be stored in the lens case. Lenses can even be stored unopened
for upto 30 days. If lenses have not been worn for long periods of time,
it is advisable to clean and disinfect them prior to wearing.
-
Thoroughly wash, rinse and dry your hands before inserting or removing
your lenses.
-
Clean and disinfect one lens at a time to avoid mixing up left and right
lenses.
-
Work over a clean surface; if working over a sink, ensure the sink plug
is in.
-
Handle your lenses with your finger tips, avoiding any contact with fingernails.
-
Rub the lens in a gentle back and forth movement (linear) rather than a
circular motion.
-
If you wear make-up, apply it after inserting your lenses.
-
Soft contact lenses and the contact lens case should be suitable replacement
period for you.
-
Try to see your eye care professional at least twice a year or as per his
recommendation. Make sure you keep your aftercare appointment.
Insertion And Removal Of Lenses
Lens Insertion
Be sure the
lens is right-side-out (the edges should turn up, not out).Pull down the
lower lid with the middle or ring finger of the same hand. Use you other
hand to hold the upper lid firmly open.Look directly at the lens or look
directly into a mirror and place the lens directly on the cornea (the large
colored circle in the centre of your eye). Repeat for the other eye.
Lens Removal
Look up and pull the lower lid down with
the middle finger of the hand you write with.Place your index finger on
the lower edge of your lens, and slide the lens down to the white of your
eye.Squeeze the lens lightly between your index finger and thumb and remove
gently.Repeat for the other eye.
Tips for Computer
Users
Staring at a monitor reduces the number
of times you blink by up to 50%! This can cause the surface of your lenses
to become dry, making your eyes feel uncomfortable and your vision less
clear. Many people find it difficult to focus properly after long stretches
in front of the computer. Others may experience tearing and itchy or dry
eyes. To avoid these problems, just remember the 20/20/20 rule: Every 20
minutes, rest your eyes for 20 seconds by staring intently at an object
at least 20 feet away.
-
To get relief, you can either add artificial tear drops or apply warm eye
pads to encourage your eyes to generate more tears.
-
Make sure you're not seated too close to your screen. If your fingers can
easily touch the monitor when you are seated, you are probably too close.
Try the 1/3 method to calculate the right distance: move away from the
monitor until you cannot see the images on the screen clearly, then divide
that distance by 3 and you should get your ideal distance.
-
Avoid having a light source directly in front or behind you. If your computer
is near a window, use a screen filter to reduce any harmful glare.
- If you need to refer to documents, hold them up at eye-level. This will
help reduce eye fatigue as you won't have to focus on two different distances
for an extended period of time.
